Commander of 20 Peloran waved the guards away from their prisoner. He keyed in the release code to the wrist bindings.

“I am sorry that they have done this to you,” the reptile said, having noticed Peloran’s reduction in rank. “This has been unfair to both you and me.”

Peloran didn’t look at his prisoner. “It is what it is, old friend.”

“I cannot understand you mammals. That statement is empty of any value.”

“Perhaps. But it sounds appropriate in nearly every situation. That makes it useful in sounding supportive or wise without having anything supportive or wise to say.”

The Falusian did the equivalent of rolling his eyes. “How is it that you mammals are stronger and more powerful than we Falusians?”

Peloran fought the urge to switch voices to the seditious. “Probably because we don’t molt our scales.”

“You smooth-skins don’t have any scales.”

“Exactly my point.”

They were silent again. The ship that was to transport the reptilian commander and his crew was arriving at the orbital military station. “I call curses upon the eggs of those who caused this to happen. Those fools who believe that we are strong enough to win in an armed conflict with you Wakira. They are so completely addled.”

“Those who govern can be that way at times,” Peloran said.

“These do not govern. Not yet. Another reason to call curses upon their eggs. They believe that for my people to be great again, we must become warlike. None of them have ever seen war. May their eggs fail to hatch!”

“This attempted invasion did not have the approval of your government?”

“As I told your questioners, the Sandragan do not hold power, except in one of the provinces. But it is just a matter of time. Their eggs are many; their hatchlings are trained to hate. To love the glory of battle. Addled. All of them, completely addled!”

“It’s your belief that they will achieve power eventually?”

“As I said, their eggs are many. And they are managing to convince other factions of the so-called wisdom of their positions. Even if they don’t achieve numerical superiority in the general population, it is just a matter of time before they will achieve political dominance throughout.” He stepped in front of Peloran. “I fear for our people, mammal. Yours and mine. They will not stop until all of you Wakira are destroyed or we are. Given the disparity in technology and weaponry – and numbers – we will be the people with no eggs nor hatchlings. A distant memory of the stupidity and foolishness of empty thinking and flawed reasoning. An utter absence of logic. A complete denial or ignorance of the facts of our condition. Addled, I tell you.” He moved to stand by Peloran’s left shoulder once again. “Pray to your god that it will never happen. Please.”

Peloran said nothing, and simply watched the docking of the transport. “You know that you will never be permitted to enter Wakiran space again.”

Magtellan was silent for a moment. “It is a small price to pay for my freedom.
